![]() ![]() One thing that I wish I did before putting the cauldron underneath my tree is coat it with some matte spray varnish, I find that that helps cut down on that distinctive sheen that just screams ‘plastic’.Īnyways, here’s my confession: I got a cauldron because I mis-remembered there being one in Fantasia! I think I mixed up a cauldron with the well that the brooms are dumping water into. I painted the handles silver, then popped the cauldron onto my tree.īecause my house continues to be a pit of darkness, I had to use a desk lamp off-screen to get enough light underneath the tree here so that everything wasn’t a giant blurry mess. I drilled holes along the bottom edge of the cauldron, then used an exacto to finish cutting through the cauldron. I ended up finding a nice size cauldron on sale after Halloween. I had actually tried to make one out of cardboard last year using Jen’s technique, but it didn’t work out too good (Me and papier mache just don’t mix). I had this tree theme planned out for a good while, so at last Halloween I went on the hunt for a nice big cauldron. With the tree topper done, I went to work on the base. Is it weird that I didn’t include Mickey’s ears on my topper? I like the hat without, but I wonder if it means it’s less recognizable to someone who isn’t super into Disney. I then just had to pop it onto the top of my tree and the topper was done! To mount the hat on the top of my tree I ended up getting a big styrofoam cone from my local art store, wrapped it with a bit of quilt batting, and carved out the centre. I should’ve also ran this edge through my serger, but I forgot and started to stuff the brim (And I felt too lazy to un-stuff it just to serge it). This was a bit tricky, but I basically sewed along the existing seam allowance to create a tube, leaving a gap so I could stuff it. I then folded up the bottom edge of the brim to meet the seam of the top edge of the brim inside the hat. I ran this edge through my serger for good measure. ![]() I sewed this onto the bottom edge of the hat, and then sewed up the entire back seam. Honestly I wish I had more of this fabric, I just really like how it looks.Īfter ironing on the vinyl I cut out a long curve of fabric for the brim. This was one of those spur of the moment thrift store finds that I bought, stuffed away in a closet for a year, and now feel vindicated for doing so because I’m finally getting some use out of it. I got fabric from a thrift store years ago, I have no idea what type of fabric it is, its sort of velvety feeling, and has this mottled colour to it which I thought was really interesting. It’s hard to resist the urge to work on something when you’re feeling motivated! Thankfully since this is going on top of my tree my slightly wobbly cut lines won’t be too visible. I actually made the hat about a week before I ended up getting my Cricut on Black Friday, so I was sort of kicking myself for not holding off on this one for a little longer so I could get some really precisely cut vinyl. The stars and moon were cut from some iron-on vinyl. Once I got something I liked I traced that shape onto my fabric and cut it out. Because I wanted the seam to be hidden in the back I made my pattern from one large piece of poster paper (As opposed to two smaller pieces, a front and back, which you might want to do if you would like to add Mickey ears to your hat. I used some poster paper rolled into a cone to figure out the general size and shape that looked good. I think it’s entirely because of the hat, it’s perfect as a tree topper. I don’t remember how I fell onto the Sorcery Mickey thing, just that it seemed to make a lot of sense as for a tree theme. Then I thought, “Why not go further with the Disney theme?” and here we are! ![]() Anyone else have any collections that were started for them by a family member? Years ago my Grandmother bought me a few Disney ornaments, which led me to getting a few more, and then another few the next year… eventually I had enough that I could decorate an entire tree with them. ![]() ![]() IrfanView and ImageGlass are two great picture viewers on Windows 10 which are free, have excellent performance, and offer tons of features.
